A driver has been ordered to stand trial, accused of killing Renmark’s former deputy mayor and her husband, and injuring a third person, in a head-on crash.
Mark Norman Hueppauff, 69, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
He pleaded not guilty to causing the deaths of Trish McAuliffe, 78, and her husband Mike, 76, and to causing serious harm to a 66-year-old Berri woman.
The charges arise from an alleged incident on the Sturt Highway at Good Hope Landing, between Waikerie and Kingston On Murray, in September last year.
It is alleged Hueppauff was driving a Ford sedan, in which the Berri woman was a passenger, that collided head-on with a Mazda, driven by Mr McAuliffe.
Mr McAuliffe was taken to hospital with critical injuries while Mrs McAuliffe – whose life took her from London during the Blitz to Adelaide’s TV industry – died at the scene.
On Tuesday, Hueppauff pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of aggravated driving without due care, causing death and injury, but prosecutors rejected his offer.
He was remanded on continuing bail to face the District Court in January, when a trial date will be set.
