A former AFL and SANFL footballer charged with 40 deception offences will contest the charges, a court has heard.

Adam Jay Cockshell, 34, played two games for Port Adelaide Football Club in 2007 and later played for SANFL teams including Norwood, South Adelaide and Port Adelaide.

He appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, where his lawyer, James Caldicott said that following negotiations with police prosecutors a number of charges were “effectively being dismissed”.

The offences allegedly occurred between March 2017 and May 2018 at a range of suburbs around Adelaide including Munno Para West, Woodville, Mile End, Prospect, Thebarton, Richmond, Marion and Port Adelaide.

Court documents previously seen by The Advertiser show Cockshell had deceived a subcontracting company believed to be his employer for more than a year.

The documents reveal each charge involves sums of money less than $5000, while a total of $17,000 is sought from Cockshell in compensation for the alleged offences.

The claims for compensation attached to each count range from $14 to $2035.

Mr Caldicott asked the matter be adjourned to a pre-trial conference.

“The matter is going to be condensed down into a very simple amount of counts, only effectively one or two that are, effectively, being discussed,” Mr Caldicott said.

He asked Cockshell not be subject to a bail agreement because he was a national sales representative who regularly travelled interstate for work.

Magistrate Jayne Basheer directed Cockshell to attend the next court hearing, which is listed next month.

“Even though you are not on bail, I think it’s appropriate, now that it’s been listed for a pre-trial conference that you attend each court hearing,” she said.

Cockshell declined to comment outside court.
