Former AFL and SANFL big man Adam Cockshell has been charged with more than 40 fraud charges against an Adelaide contracting business.
Cockshell, 34, was facing 44 deception charges and a request for more than $17,000 in compensation for offences ranging from March 2017 to May 2018.
The 198cm big man played two games for Port Adelaide before a lengthy career in the SANFL where he played for Norwood, South Adelaide and Port Adelaide.
Court documents seen by The Advertiser allege that Cockshell deceived a subcontracting company believed to be his employer for more than a year.
The dates of the offences are spread across the year and include locations like Mile End, Woodville, Prospect, Thebarton, Mile End, Richmond, Marleston and Port Adelaide.
The company provides subcontracting services including generators, communications and commercial maintenance services.
Cockshell was listed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday but did not attend.
James Caldicott, for Cockshell, told Magistrate David McLeod that negotiations between his client and the police prosecution were ongoing.
It is expected that several of the charges will be dropped while others could be contested.
All of the charges involve sums of money less than $5000.
The claims for compensation by the company range from $14 to $2035.
According to Cockshell’s online biography he worked for the company from 2010 to 2018, his employment ending shortly after the last alleged act of deception.
He listed himself as an electrical supervisor in the company’s “uninterruptable” power service division.
UPS provides backup power for computer networks which kicks in when mains electricity fails.
Cockshell played two games for Port Adelaide in the AFL in 2007 but was delisted at the end of 2008 without playing any further games.
He played 46 games for Norwood and averaged just over a goal a game.
