Nearly $2 million worth of meth, destined for Adelaide, has been found hidden in pulley wheels.
A Klemzig man, 26, has been arrested and charged with one count of trafficking in a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug.
The package was intercepted by Australian Border Force officers on 15 November at Melbourne Gateway Facility.
Consisting of three separate packages, the drugs were shipped from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and destined for Adelaide.
Australian Federal Police inspected the package, which revealed a crystalline substance. Tests showed a positive result for methamphetamine.
Police will allege the 3.60 kilograms of methamphetamine seized has a street value of approximately $1.8 million.
The investigation was a joint AFP and SAPOL initiative.
The Klemzig man was refused police bail, and appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court. He was granted court bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 25 May 2021.
SAPOL Detective Chief Inspector Darren Fielke said the seizure ensures police are succeeding in their task of stopping drug dealers and criminals attempting to import drugs into Australia.
“The success of this investigation highlights the high level of collaboration and information sharing capabilities between each of the participating law enforcement agencies,” he said.
“This collaboration is a strength of law enforcement and is highly effective in attacking drug trafficking activities occurring within Australian communities.”
While the coronavirus pandemic has slowed methamphetamine supply into the state, it has failed to quell the increasing popularity of the “really dangerous” liquid hallucinogen fantasy.
The seizure, and harrowing potential for another three kilos of meth to be on Adelaide streets, comes as The Advertiser detailed the decline of supply, and the increase in use of party drugs.
