An elderly man leaving a late-night game of cards at a friend’s house is in a critical condition after reversing into a fence and Stobie pole, with the force of the crash throwing him from his vehicle.

The man, 85, of Fulham Gardens, was playing gin rummy with friends at a Findon household on Crittenden Road on Tuesday night.

He got in his Holden Commodore, parked on the property’s front lawn, to leave just before midnight when he started to reverse out.

The homeowner, who chose not to be named, said he then heard two loud bangs that sounded “like a bomb".

“He normally takes a long time to drive out, he goes very slowly. I thought he had already left a long time ago when I heard the bang,” the homeowner said of his friend.

“He hit the pole so hard the door opened and he was thrown out.

“I ran outside and I saw the car open but no body inside.”

He saw his friend lying on the road near his car, not moving and bleeding from his head.

He rushed inside and called triple-0.

The 85-year-old victim was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

“I only hope he pulls through. I’m still shaking,” his friend said on Wednesday morning.

Major Crash officers examined the scene overnight to determine the cause of the crash.
