Burnside motorcyclist dies in hospital after crash at Prospect, where bike was airborne for up to 10m

A young Burnside man has died from his injuries two days after crashing his motorcycle at Prospect. His pillion passenger remains in a critical but stable condition.

A young motorcyclist has died in hospital after suffering serious head injuries when his bike was sent airborne after hitting a ditch at Prospect on Sunday.

The 20-year-old from Burnside was riding with a 20-year-old Clearview man as his pillion passenger on Guilford Avenue at Prospect, before the bike crashed at about 1.20am Sunday morning.

Guilford Ave resident Adarsh Surshkumar was out the front of his house when the crash happened on Sunday morning, and saw a Harley Davidson bike hit a ditch at the intersection of Guilford Ave and Maud Street.

“We have a dip in front of our house … I guess they didn’t see the dip and crash landed,” Mr Surshkumar told The Advertiser on Sunday.

“It (the motorbike) was airborne for sometime, I thought they were going to crash into our car.”

He said the bike was airborne for about 10 metres, heading east on Guilford Ave, before the 21-year-old passenger fell off the bike.

The rider did not come off the bike for another 20 metres. The bike finally stopped about 100 metres from when it hit the ditch.

The injured 20-year-old Clearview man remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Mr Surshkumar said he was first on the scene, and immediately dialled emergency services while trying to help the injured men.

“I didn’t know what to do so I called Triple-0.”

An off duty paramedic who lives on the street came to the aid of the men before Medstar and police arrived.

Another witness, John Kukula, heard the crash while he was watching TV.

“I just heard a bike screeching down the road … and two guys were lying on the road,” Mr Kukula said.

The passenger did not appear to be wearing a helmet, he said.

“I feel sorry for them (the families involved), I think they’d be devastated.”
