A father-of-three accused of shooting another man in the face during a violent altercation in Adelaide’s north has been remanded in custody after his application for bail was rejected.

Paulo Bessa-Da Silva, 40, of Salisbury, appeared via video linked in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday after he was charged with attempted murder and aggravated causing serious harm over an alleged shooting at Waterloo Corner in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The alleged victim – a 43-year-old man from Wall Flat, on the River Murray – is in an induced coma in the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

He was found after he crashed his car into a tree on Dunn Rd at Waterloo Corner about 2.15am on Thursday.

Prosecutors told the court the victim, discovered near his smashed car, had facial injuries “consistent with being shot in the face with pellets”.

Bessa-De Silva was arrested without incident at a Marden home later on Thursday morning.

He was interviewed by police and charged that afternoon.

The court heard investigators are yet to locate the firearm used in the alleged shooting.

Prosecutors told the court the victim was heard at the scene saying “Paul shot me”.

They said Bessa-Da Silva and the victim had engaged in an altercation prior to the alleged incident.

Bessa-Da Silva’s defence lawyer disputed this, saying his client briefly saw the victim at about 4pm on Wednesday and was last seen on Dunn Rd at about 11pm on Wednesday, when he dropped a witness home.

The court heard Bessa-Da Silva is a father-of- three, who will turn 41 tomorrow.

He is a qualified electrician by trade however he has not worked in several years due to a workplace back injury and is in the process of applying for a disability pension.

The court was told Bessa-Da Silva, who was supported by his sister and daughter in court, had a history of drug and driving offences but no history of violent crimes.

His defence lawyer asked the court to grant him home detention bail.

However, this was rejected due to the seriousness of the allegations.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in August.
