A driver caught on video doing burnouts in a smoking car on the wrong side of the road in Mount Gambier over the weekend remains on the run.

Police received a dozen complaints from the public regarding a silver Ford AU driving erratically on Jubilee Highway East and other roads around the area.

The car had missing number plates and no rear bumper.

It was seen doing a number of burnouts causing smoke, driving on the wrong side of the road and mounting a kerb.

Other similar incidents were reported on Kennedy Ave, North Terrace, Penola Road, Boandik Terrace, Hanson Street, Ayres Street and Cockburn Street.

People gathered near a hotel on Jubilee Highway East, filming the incident and encouraging the dangerous driver by “wooing”.

The videos were posted on social media and the driver is yet to be identified.

Locals took to social media, saying the man is known to the area.

“I’ve seen this idiot before,” one post read.

“(He) scared the crap out of me, middle of the arvo, thought he was going to kill someone.”

Another said they constantly have cars doing dangerous burnouts near their house.

“Seriously over it. Waking us up overnight and also having them do it during the day.”

Superintendent Phil Hoff, the officer in charge of the Limestone Coast Local Service Area said the cavalier attitude to the safety of others is unfathomable.

“His manner of driving caused enormous danger and risk to the public and other road users,” Superintendent Hoff said.

“The labelling of the social media images in relation to this behaviour belies ignorance and immaturity. There are people in the community who know who this individual is and we need their assistance to deal with him firmly.

“An imbecile such as this will inevitably kill or injure someone or themselves.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
