Three people have died and a number of others were injured in a horrific weekend on South Australian roads.

The first crash was a double fatality that happened at Nuriootpa in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The driver, 23 of a Ford utility and his passenger, 20, both from the Barossa region, died at the scene when vehicle travelling east on Angaston Road about 2.30am on Saturday hit a tree

A third man, 20, and also from the Barossa region who was travelling unrestrained in the rear of the ute sustained serious injuries and was flown to the RAH.

The crash contributed to what officer in charge of the Barossa region Superintendent Shane Addison said at the time was the state’s worst start for road deaths in more than a decade.

The second happened about 24 hours later, when a motorcyclist, 39, of Davoren Park, crashed into a fence at Sandy Creek on Saturday about 5.30pm on Barossa Valley Way.

He died in the RAH on Sunday, succumbing to his injuries.

He was the eighth motorcyclist to be killed on South Australian roads this year – nearly a third of all road deaths.

Meanwhile a driver, 29, from Elizabeth South and his passenger, 27, managed to escape a car which burst into flames after smashing into the fence of Lake Windemere School, Salisbury North, about 2.30am Sunday.

The male passenger was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital with minor injuries.

The Holden – which was completely destroyed in the fire – was allegedly seen doing burnouts in Tabora Crescent before the crash.

The driver was arrested and charged with driving disqualified, without due care and property damage. He was bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court in April.

After a weekend of carnage on the roads, particularly in the Barossa region, Superintendent Shane Addison said police are frustrated that the message in relation to road safety is “not getting through”.

“The safety of drivers and the ability to reduce the road toll is not solely a police problem, it’s a community issue. One of the ‘fatal fives’ is dangerous road use, which is about poor choices,” Superintendent Addison said.

“I don’t think it is a secret to anyone that riding unrestrained in the back of a utility is dangerous and in these circumstances it is just ridiculous. SA police cannot police that sort of poor decision making, it is wholly and solely down to the individual.”
