A woman who allegedly smashed her car into a tree in a fiery crash while street racing – injuring her passengers – has been urged to get a lawyer.

Zea Ellen Murphy, 21, was charged after a crash on Piggott Range Rd in Onkaparinga Hills on June 10, 2022, injuring herself and three passengers in her car.

Prosecutors allege Ms Murphy, of Noarlunga Downs, was driving a motor vehicle in a street race at the time of the crash.

In court documents released to The Advertiser, prosecutors allege Ms Murphy was driving in a “culpably negligent manner, or recklessly, or at a speed or manner dangerous to any person, and by that culpable negligence, recklessness or other conduct caused harm”.

“It is further alleged that the circumstances of aggravation are that the offender was, at the time of the offence, driving a motor vehicle in a street race,” documents allege

In the Adelaide Magistrate Court last week, Ms Murphy was urged by Magistrate Brian Nitschke to follow up with Legal Aid about the assignment of a lawyer because she was facing “very serious matters”.

The court heard prosecutors were prepared to finalise the charges against her, but Ms Murphy was given the opportunity to seek legal advice before a date would be set to enter pleas.

The 21-year-old is yet to enter a plea to three counts of aggravated causing harm by dangerous driving.

She was previously also facing one charge of participate in or prepare for a street race – which was withdrawn by prosecutors.

Ms Murphy’s car allegedly struck a tree before 9pm after it veered off Piggott Range Rd before being engulfed in flames.

All occupants of the car managed to escape, and were taken to Flinders Medical Centre for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash.

Mr Nitsche remanded Ms Murphy on continuing bail to appear in court again in May.
