The daughters of a woman who assisted with the murder of her disabled husband have denounced her in court, saying she should be in jail for the rest of her life.

A woman who helped orchestrate the murder of her disabled husband has asked for more time to assess her “progress” as her betrayed family confront her in court – for the second time.

On Monday, the Supreme Court heard from the family of Steven Hinrichsen, who told Justice Anne Bampton how his murder changed their lives – as they denounced their mother.

Before they could speak, Jane Abbey KC, for Tanya Hinrichsen, told the court her client was awaiting a psychological report regarding her “progress” during her five-plus years in custody.

“I apologise for the application (for adjournment) … it is highly unsatisfactory, may I say Your Honour, standing here asking for this indulgence today, but I fear I must ask,” Ms Abbey said.

Her Honour agreed it was “unsatisfactory” as it had been “a long row to hoe” for Mr Hinrichsen’s family.

Ms Abbey said the report’s necessity was sparked by information “volunteered” by her client the day prior.

The court heard they would need a month to prepare the report.

Despite the granting of the adjournment, Mr Hinrichsen’s family – including Tanya Hinrichsen’s children, gave their victim impact statements.

One of Mr Hinrichsen’s children told the court she was in labour at the time she learned of her father’s death, and December 15, 2018, would forever be a “very emotional day”.

“I thought to check out social media, and I just broke down … going through labour in shock and sadness was never part of my birth plan,” the prosecutor read.

Hinrichsen’s daughters denounced and disowned her – demanding she never speak to them again.

“Coming up to speak about this again is something I didn’t want to do, but it is the only way to express my sadness and anger for you,” one of her daughters said.

“You deserve to be in jail for the rest of your life, I want nothing to do with you.”

Tanya Hinrichsen, 47, was found guilty by a jury in 2021 – alongside her lover Gavin Skinner – of murdering Steven Hinrichsen, 63, at their Morphett Vale home.

They were jailed for life with non-parole periods of 22 and 24 years respectively.

A second man, Robert Thrupp, was found guilty of manslaughter for his involvement.

Following an appeal Hinrichsen’s conviction was quashed by a majority Court of Appeal ruling.

However, during her second arraignment before a second trial in November 2024, the 47-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter – which was accepted in satisfaction for one count of murder.

Justice Bampton thanked Mr Hinrichsen’s family for their statements, and Her Honour adjourned the matter to hear submissions from prosecutors in late June.
