A woman has been so badly assaulted by her partner at a party she is bleeding in her brain, a court has heard.

Australia's Shame: Horrifying trend in violence against women

A woman was at a party with several other people when she was allegedly attacked by her partner at Whyalla Stuart, a friend says.

Kaylene “Mimi” Coleman, 28, was allegedly punched in her head and upper body at a Murphy Cres home about 9.30am on Thursday, police said.

She was taken to the Whyalla Hospital before she was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

Her partner, a local 42-year-old man, was charged with aggravated serious assault causing serious harm.

Aaron Strangways, of Whyalla Stuart appeared via videolink at Port Augusta Court on Friday afternoon.

Strangways sat silently while police prosecutor Sergeant Adrian Bellamy described his alleged offending as “the upper end of domestic violence.”

“She’s extremely poorly and possibly having brain surgery, because she’s got bleeds on the brain,” Sergeant Bellamy said.

Magistrate Anna Jackson set the charge determination date for January next year, allowing time for more clarity to be determined over the extent of the injuries.

Strangways did not apply for bail and will be remanded in custody.

A friend of the couple, who lives across the street and asked not to be named, said the pair rarely fought.

She was hoping Ms Coleman’s condition improves.

“It’s weird because … they never fight, that’s the first time I’ve heard of it,” the friend said.

The friend said the home’s owner was at a funeral in the APY Lands and relatives were staying at the house and decided to have the party.

She said she first heard of the incident when she looked out of her window and saw “all these cop cars”.

“There were a lot of cops in the street,” the friend said.

“They came to doorknock every door down the street to ask questions.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
