A man accused of killing a woman believed to be his domestic partner has appeared in court for the first time.

Michael Edward Amos, 53, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon charged with the murder of a 45-year-old woman.

Appearing on screen from the Port Augusta police station, Mr Amos – who was wearing a blue medical gown – did not apply for bail.

The Advertiser understands the woman suffered severe headwounds and was found in the bathroom of at a home in the Davenport Community outside of Port Augusta on Thursday night.

A police prosecutor told the court detectives were requesting a 12 month adjournment before Mr Amos would appear in court again.

The court heard that the 12 months was the estimated time for Forensic Science SA to analyse the evidence gathered from the scene.

Magistrate Joanna Martin said the year-long delay before Mr Amos appeared in court again was too long.

“I do understand there are some delays in forensic science but there needs to be a shorter time to get the matter back in front of the court,” she said.

Mr Amos will next appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court in July next year.

Officers and paramedics arrived at the home and tried to revive the 45-year-old woman, however she died at the scene.

Following the incident, Mr Amos was arrested by detectives and refused bail.
