A stunt driver who brought terror to life onscreen in the second “Wolf Creek” movie was a nightmare for used car buyers, a court has found – and has been fined for his deception.

On Thursday, the Adelaide Magistrates Court fined Jim Hiotis, 51, of Netley, $4000 for wiping as much as 110,000km off the odometers of cars he had for sale.

The court heard Hiotis – a stunt truck driver who worked on “Wolf Creek 2” – came to the attention of Consumer and Business Services over a Holden Caprice.

It heard that, when he bought it from a Queensland auction house, the car had an odometer reading of just over 116,000 kilometres.

When it was registered in SA, however, it had been wound back to just over 63,000km and was offered for sale, at auction, with forged papers supporting that deception.

The court also heard Hiotis bought four other cars from auction houses in Victoria, NSW and Queensland, wiping between 29,500km and 111,750km from their records.

Hiotis was convicted of five counts of interference with an odometer and one count of

dishonest dealing with documents.

Outside court, Commissioner for Consumer Affairs Dini Soulio said Hiotis’ offending was “a calculated attempt to deceive potential buyers”.

“He had clearly gone to great lengths to try and cover his tracks,” he said.

“This is serious misconduct that could have significantly misled consumers who could

have purchased these vehicles, not realising the full extent of their previous use.”
