Emergency services were notified of a fire at about 3.50pm.
Local firefighters contained the fire to one area in under 15 minutes.
More than 20 firefighters with five fire trucks from the MFS and CFS were at the scene.
The fire is believed to be accidental but the cost of the damage remains unclear.
Operations at the steelworks were affected, but the broader site continued to work as normal.
A GFG Alliance spokesperson confirmed the incident.
“GFG Alliance can confirm MFS crews attended the Whyalla Steelworks and helped extinguish a fire which occurred in a process wash oil pit this afternoon,” they said.
“There were no staff in the area at the time and we can confirm all team members are safe and there have been no injuries.
