One of three teen boys charged over brawl at Westfield Marion that led to a wild mass evacuation and lockdown has been warned not to leave his house after being granted bail.
People were injured and thousands of shoppers feared for their lives as they hid in closed shops after centre management issued an ‘armed offender’ warning about 3pm on Sunday, June 23.
The evacuation and lockdown were sparked after a knife was allegedly pulled during a fight over a hoodie, leading to the arrest of three teen boys aged 15 and 16.
The teenagers, who can’t be named for legal reasons, appeared in the Adelaide Youth Court, by video link from custody on Thursday, charged with assault, affray and aggravated robbery.
One of 15-year-old boys, who was under the care of the Department of Child Protection at the time, withdrew his application for home detention bail.
Police allege the boy from Mitchell Park was in possession of an extendible baton at the time of the offence.
A lawyer for the 16-year-old – from Adelaide – also withdrew an application for home detention bail.
The other 15-year-old boy – from Morphett Vale – was released on the strictest form of home detention bail to reside at home with his parents.
“If you come before me again there’s no way that I would grant you bail … you aren’t to leave your house,” Magistrate Tracee Ann Micallef said.
“There will be no further opportunities given to you, do I make myself very clear?”
“Yes,” the youth responded.
The Adelaide Youth Court previously heard details about what caused the fight that led to the lockdown, with prosecutors alleging it was sparked over an attempt to steal a $155 jumper.
The three teenagers were captured on CCTV armed with the weapon and batons, the court heard.
When the incident occurred, alarms sounded over the centre’s speakers informing shoppers of people armed with weapons, asking them to leave immediately or lockdown in a shop safely.
By the time specialist armed police arrived, Westfield Marion had enacted its emergency protocols, which meant some shoppers were forced to lockdown in stores.
At 4.55pm, the first of the shoppers exited the store after two hours of being trapped, waiting for news.
Police said two expandable batons were seized at the time of the arrest.
The 15-year-old from Morphett Vale was arrested while wearing the allegedly stolen designer jumper – and seen pulling a machete from his pants during the conflict, the court heard.
The boy appeared in the Adelaide Youth Court last week separately to his two co-accused.
The court heard the teen was currently serving a suspended sentence for multiple previous offences, including two counts of assault against his then-girlfriend and possessing a knife.
The youths are next in court in August.
