A defective vehicle being driven without headlights has drawn the attention of police twice in less than two hours, resulting in two women booking a court date after they were caught allegedly drink driving.

Police were on Morphett St in Adelaide’s CBD just before 12am on Tuesday night when they spotted a vehicle travelling towards them without headlights.

Police stopped the Mazda sedan, which a SAPOL spokesman described on radio as “falling apart”, and the driver was submitted to a breath test, allegedly returning a positive result of 0.201 – four times the limit.

Checks revealed the driver, a 43-year-old Hope Valley, woman was driving without a licence.

She was reported for driving without a licence and drink driving.

The police officers also observed the vehicle had a smashed windscreen and the car was defected.

However, less than two hours later, patrols were on Hindley St when they spotted the same Mazda sedan travelling on the wrong side of Morphett St with no lights on.

Patrols stopped the Mazda on Hindley St and observed a defect notice attached to the smashed windscreen.

The driver, a 36-year-old woman from Northern Territory, was submitted to a roadside breath test that returned a positive result – however she refused to comply with the breath analysis test.

She was reported for drink driving, driving a defective vehicle, driving on the wrong side of the road and driving at night without lights.

The Mazda was impounded and the pair will be summonsed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.
