Truck driver to stand trial over Marryatville High School student crash

A truck driver has been ordered to stand trial for allegedly striking down two students after his bid for a plea bargain was rejected by prosecutors.

The truck driver who allegedly ran a red light and struck two Marryatville High students at a pedestrian crossing has denied his conduct behind the wheel amounts to dangerous driving.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Sang Van Huynh pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving.

He instead pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of aggravated driving without due care – a concession that was not accepted by prosecutors.

As a result, Mr Huynh will now stand trial before the District Court.

Mr Huynh, 60, of Ottoway, was charged following the crash, on Kensington Rd, just after 8am on Wednesday, March 22.

Student Amity Nield, 16, was seriously injured while her friend Isaac Jones, 16, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.

Dashcam footage, captured by other motorists, allegedly shows Mr Huynh’s truck travelling through the intersection seconds after the light turned red.

On Tuesday, Mr Huynh was remanded on continuing bail to face the District Court in May, when a trial date will be set.
