PolAir tracked the car along Grange Rd, Grand Junction Rd and Port Rd heading towards the city.
The car ran out of fuel on Emma St at Athol Park where the driver was arrested, with the dramatic moment captured on security cameras.
Footage shows police approach the man with guns drawn before an officer uses a baton to smash the driver’s side window.
Officers then drag the man from the car and pin him to the ground.
Witness Keith Smith told 7News he stayed in his home out of fear he might have been stabbed.
Police said the driver, a 38-year-old Seaton man, would be charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, property damage and two counts of aggravated assault causing harm and was expected to face the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.
Police said the incident was not ransom and all parties were known to each other.
