A top SA horse trainer has faced court charged with a New Year’s Day assault - just one week after his brother faced accusations of having assaulted him.

On Thursday, Todd Balfour made his first appearance in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.

Mr Balfour, 46, of Camden Park, has yet to plead to one basic count of assault.

Court documents allege that offence occurred at Glenelg on January 1, 2025.

Mr Balfour’s brother, Ryan, 45, faced the same court last week charged with one count of assault and one count of serious criminal trespass.

Prosecutors alleged those offences were committed against Todd Balfour at Camden Park on October 22 last year.

Last year, Ryan Balfour’s training licence was suspended, and then cancelled, after one of his runners tested positive to banned levels of cobalt.

The men are the sons of former jockey and trainer David Balfour, who died in 2014.

On Thursday, counsel for Todd Balfour asked his bail be varied to allow him to travel interstate - but only for work.

“I’ve spoken with the prosecution about this... our application is to, essentially, rework the bail condition in relation to leaving the state,” he said.

“His employment is in the horse training business and there are, obviously, interstate commitments as a result of that.

“Given the innumerable opportunities interstate, we ask he be allowed to travel without prior seeking permission, but for work purposes only.”

The court agreed, and remanded Mr Balfour on continuing bail to face court again next month.
