Robert Dyna hit with 18 new charges over $1m in allegedly stolen goods at Burton salvage yard

A man arrested after a police raid turned up almost $1m in allegedly stolen goods at an Adelaide salvage yard faces new charges, a court has heard.

Bizarre haul hidden in 20 shipping containers

A man charged after police found up to $1m worth of allegedly stolen goods in more than 20 shipping containers in Adelaide’s north is facing 19 new charges including firearm possession and money laundering.

Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday heard Robert Christian Dyna, 41, had previously faced court over charges relating to property found at the Burton premises – but they had been dropped.

“The police have been to Mr Dyna’s premises on and off for years, this is not the first time that he has been brought before the court in relation to a suggestion that he’s in possession of stolen goods,” counsel for Mr Dyna told the court.

“In my submission, there is a huge issue with respect to possession.

“A simple Google of that address, Your Honour, will identify at least one other business at least registered to that address.”

The court heard a binder of receipts, photos and other documentations from the scrap and salvage business where Mr Dyna works had recently been supplied to police – but should be considered before allegedly stolen goods were returned to members of the public.

Mr Dyna, of Burton, was arrested on June 6 after police raided the Waterloo Corner Rd premises and allegedly found almost 20 containers and stolen property including bobcats, cars, trucks, trailers, horse-drawn carriages and other items.

He was charged with trafficking in a controlled drug, and four counts of dishonestly taking property without consent.

After continued investigations of the 5000 sqm salvage yard, police charged Mr Dyna with another eight counts of dishonestly dealing with property, eight counts of unlawful possession, possession of a prescribed firearm without licence, acquire, own or possess ammunition without licence and knowingly engaging in money laundering.

Police alleged a makeshift bedroom – believed to be where Mr Dyna was residing – and a clandestine drug lab were allegedly on the property as well.

Prosecution alleged a firearm was found wrapped in a blanket behind the engine of a golf cart and coupled with the 5g of methamphetamines, constituted a serious firearms offence – precluding him from presumption of bail.

The court heard police believed Mr Dyna had not been operating independently, and being released on home detention bail could lead to investigations being hindered.

Magistrate Stratton-Smith ordered Mr Dyna be released on home detention bail, but police prosecution asked for his release to be held for a bail review.

Prosecutors have 72 hours to bring Mr Dyna before the Supreme Court.
