A man who allegedly orchestrated the arson attacks of two vet clinics has been ordered to stay behind bars on remand after a failed bail review in the Supreme Court.

Dimitri Gueorguiev Iliev, 33, has been charged with one count each of arson, attempted arson and trafficking in a large commercial quantity of drugs after allegedly throwing a molotov cocktail in the Hilton Vet Clinic on March 7.

On Friday, Judge Judy Hughes refused Mr Iliev bail – his third attempt – noting the “nature and gravity” of the charges.

“The allegations are serious,” Justice Hughes said. “Charges allege a calculated plan to damage property by fire (and) lives were put at risk by the uncontrolled nature of the fire.

“The alleged motive is ‘petty retaliation’ undertaken in a reckless manner. Further, I’m not satisfied the risks the applicant presents to the witnesses and to the administration of justice could be mitigated even by home detention bail, and the application is refused.”

The Adelaide Magistrates Court earlier this year heard allegations that the Findon man’s “planned” attacks on two vet clinics owned by the same family were out of revenge after their daughter told Mr Iliev’s then-fiancee about an affair he had been having.

Mr Iliev was due to face court earlier in March on the arson charges, however fresh cannabis-related charges were laid after police conducted a search of a home shortly after his arrest.

The court heard Mr Iliev had been working alongside alleged cocaine trafficker Rabi Abu Abareh, and another woman, and has since been charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of cannabis found in Wingfield last November.

In March, Magistrate Paul Foley opposed all forms of bail, remanding Mr Iliev in custody until his June appearance.
