Authorities have confirmed a bushfire burning in the state’s southeast has been contained, but residents are still urged to take caution in the area.

At 11.30am on Saturday, the Country Fire Service issued a watch and act warning for Robe residents, urging them to “leave now” to protect their safety.

The bushfire was believed to have been burning uncontrolled in a south west direction towards the Robe airport and Southern Ports Highway.

The CFS said conditions are continually changing.

There are currently six vehicles and 18 firefighters, as well as three water bombing aircraft responding to the incident.

“The spread of the fire has been halted, but crews will remain on scene mopping up and making the area safe,” the CFS said in a statement.

“Hazards in the area may include reduced visibility due to smoke and emergency vehicles operating in the area. Due to the amount of people travelling from the Christmas period in the area, people are reminded to enact their bushfire plan and if you do not have to be in the area, please avoid it.”

Robe Mayor Lisa Ruffell urged residents to follow their fire plans, and encouraged residents and tourists to remain cautious.

“Keep safe and be aware. It’s windy and warm, so please stay aware of the conditions and listen to warnings from emergency services,” she said.
