A woman and young boy have been rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a serious crash in the state’s South-East.
A car and truck crashed head-on as they were travelling on the Riddoch Highway at Joanna – between Naracoorte and Penola – about 9.30am on Thursday.
Two of the three occupants, a 28-year-old Naracoorte woman and 4-year-old boy, were rushed to hospital after sustaining life threatening injuries.
The other occupant, a 8-year-old girl, has “miraculously escaped serious injury”, South Australia Police said.
It’s understood the car’s three occupants were a mother and her children, with a child’s seat spotted close to the vehicle’s wreckage.
It was initially reported that three people in the car had sustained life-threatening injuries, however, SA Police later clarified that only two of the three occupants were seriously injured.
The 59-year-old male driver of the truck from the Limestone Coast, was also taken to hospital after sustaining minor injuries.
The Riddoch Highway was closed for most of the day but has since reopened.
Witness Eric Nieto was driving just behind the crash and told 9 News he was still shaken by the incident.
“You could see there was a big accident ahead,” he said.
“The thought hasn’t left my mind about what’s happened, at the moment I feel a bit sad.”
