16-year-old girl remanded in custody on murder charge after Andrews Farm stabbing

A 16-year-old will remain in custody for months, a court has ruled, after being accused of murdering a man in the early hours of Boxing Day.

The Advertiser/7NEWS Adelaide: Retirement home murder, Andrews Farm stabbing

A teenager accused of murdering a man in the early hours of Boxing Day will remain in youth detention until at least April while evidence, including DNA, is gathered.

On Wednesday, the girl, 16, faced the Youth Court by video link following her arrest during the public holiday long weekend.

Neither she nor her alleged victim can be named due to statutory suppression orders prohibiting publication of any details that may tend to identify a young alleged offender or their victims.

Wearing a long-sleeved jumper and flanked by youth support workers, the girl clutched a box of tissues as her counsel told the court there would be “no application for bail at this stage”.

They said they may reconsider that position in the weeks to come.

Prosecutors asked the matter be adjourned for 14 weeks “to gather most of the materials” needed to finalise their case against the girl.

“We do not expect the post-mortem or DNA reports (to be ready) by then, but most of the materials are likely to be at hand,” he said.

Magistrate Oliver Koehn remanded the girl in detention until April.

The 55-year-old Andrews Farm man died in hospital on Tuesday night after he was found at his home with life-threatening stab wounds in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police had attended the Petherton Rd home at Andrews Farm just after 2.50am on Monday.

The 16-year-old girl from the home was arrested at the time and originally charged with attempted murder. That charge will now be upgraded to murder.

Footage of her arrest captured the handcuffed girl wearing a Jim Beam singlet being taken from the scene by police with her hands wrapped in paper bags.

She has been refused bail to appear in the Adelaide Youth Court on Wednesday.

Police say this incident is not random and both parties are known to each other.
