The air is not so sweet in the Adelaide parklands after a Big Bird costume worth $160,000 was stolen from a circus show.

Police said the large yellow costume was stolen from the Sesame Street Circus Spectacular at Bonython Park sometime between 4.30pm Sunday and 9.30am Monday.

The costume – made in America from genuine ostrich feathers – was used to greet children and other attendees before the show.

The show’s managing director, Keith Brown, said he had no idea why someone would steal the costume.

“When you’re going on a tour and we’re here in SA, and we’ve brought it especially to SA, we’ve gone to a large expense to bring a show like this out from America and this like this you just don’t expect to happen,” Mr Brown said.

“(The costumes) are all made in America and have all been especially brought out from America.

“Either someone has been to see the show and seen it or they’ve been able to get into the big top and found it and decided to take it.”

Police, who combed through CCTV footage on Monday, said feathers were seen nearby on Port Road.

Anyone who has information about the missing costume should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
