Police have arrested and charged a sixth person with rape over an alleged gang attack on two women in a Hindley St carpark earlier this month.

On Sunday, Eastern District detectives arrested a 16-year-old boy from Alberton and charged him with two counts of engage in sexual intercourse with a person without consent.

He faced the Youth Court on Monday and did not apply for bail, however, his lawyer said she may file an application on his behalf at a later date.

The charges arise from a reported incident in the early hours of December 6 in the stairwell of the Hotel Plaza carpark.

Previously, prosecutors said two women were allegedly gang-raped by seven men – some of whom committed sex acts, others of whom stood and watched – for half an hour.

It is further alleged one of the women managed to escape but went back to rescue her friend, only to be set upon a second time.

The 16-year-old is the sixth person to be charged with taking part in the alleged attack – and the seventh arrest overall in connection with the incident.

He joins another youth, 17, and four men – a 20-year-old of Adelaide, a 20-year-old of no fixed address, a 23-year-old of Kensington and a 21-year-old of Clearview – who have also been charged with two counts of engaging in sexual intercourse without consent.

On Monday, prosecutors asked the youth’s case be adjourned for a longer-than-normal period, given the volume of material and number of adult co-accused.

Counsel for the youth said they did not opposed that course given the potential complexity of the matter.

Asked, by the magistrate, whether defence was suggesting the matter would end up in the adult courts, the boy’s lawyer replied: “I absolutely am not.”

The boy was remanded in custody to face court in February.

Last week, a court heard the 20-year-old from Adelaide was awaiting trial for two unrelated counts of rape in “not dissimilar” circumstances.

That man, whose name is suppressed as the investigation continues, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday and will stand trial in the District Court next year. He is also charged with breaching his bail.

The 21-year-old is further accused of offering to pay one of the alleged victims $4000 to give false evidence about the incident. A second youth, 17, is separately charged over that alleged attempt to induce a witness.

Investigations into the incident are continuing, with detectives aware of a number of other people allegedly involved in the incident.

Authorities are asking anyone with information that may assist to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
