Police are investigating an incident after a series of gunshots were fired at a man in Virginia Friday morning

Police are investigating after residents heard several shots being fired in a suburb north of Adelaide on Friday morning.

Residents on a peaceful street in the northern suburbs were woken by a series of shots fired on early Friday morning, with police now hunting for the suspected shooter.

Police said a resident living on Alfred Rd, Virginia, had seen a 4WD, which looked like a dual cab utility, lingering about 2.30am.

The resident then shone a torch at the car.

Police said the man then heard four shots being fired from the car, before he ran into his home and called for assistance – but the car had already sped off from the scene and driving west on Alfred Rd, heading towards Penfield Rd.

Once police arrived at the location they found three spent shotgun cartridges.

The Advertiser understands that the suspect(s) were involved in a dispute with one of the residents living on the street.

There were no reports of injuries or property damage after the incident.

Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene shortly after the incident occurred, while detective were seen interviewing the neighbours later in the morning.
