More than 100 people have been rounded up by police in Adelaide’s CBD after a shoplifting sting in the wake of an outcry over shock city crime stats.

Police said they arrested and reported 115 people on Thursday and Friday last week, recovering about $24,000 worth of allegedly stolen goods.

It comes after new figures revealed a person was being seriously assaulted almost every day in the city and North Adelaide as shop theft and property damage reports climbed.

Police said 37 people were arrested and 78 reported for alleged thefts and other crimes on Thursday and Friday,

Two 14-year-old girls from Kilburn were arrested for committing three thefts. They were released on bail to attend the Adelaide Youth Court at a later date.

A 24-year-old woman from North Adelaide was also arrested for three thefts and possessing a clothing tag remover.

She was bailed to attend the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.

Another 46-year-old woman from Morphett Vale was arrested for one count of theft, but police later discovered that the woman was wanted for three alleged thefts, and had four arrest warrants. She was refused bail by police.

A 28-year-old man from Brompton was arrested for alleged theft, breach of bail, failing to provide personal details, carrying an offensive weapon and unlawful possession. He was also refused bail by police.

Senior Constable Mike Greenwood said the “operation supports our retailers and sends a strong message to people that choose to steal from shops.”

“We have been working closely with retailers to identify suspect persons, particularly those who steal in an organised manner to disrupt their offending,” Mr Greenwood said.

The arrests came on the same day a security guard was stabbed after confronting a group of teenage shoplifters, on City Cross Arcade.

The 35-year-old guard sustained stab wounds to his abdomen at about 5.30pm on Friday.
