Alleged Gulfview Heights, Birkenhead shooting case expands as eight face court

A group of eight have faced court together for the first time, facing different charges relating to an alleged crime-spree across the city.

A group of eight has faced court together for the first time after a week of alleged crimes – including two suburban shootings – became one case.

Makavelli Lao Manhire, 23, of Salisbury North, Jayden John Sansbury, 25, of Prospect, Arshaan Ahmad Khan, 33, of Lonsdale, Lachlan Anthony Charles Pike-Wills, 23, of Pooraka, Bianca Wanganeen, 26, of Smithfield Plains, Jyrell William Davey, 20, of Narrung, Anthony Edwin Wilson, 21, of Prospect, and Lito-Vangeli So Hung Paiva, 25, of Salisbury Park, all appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.

Prosecutors told Magistrate Brian Nitschke each alleged offender was now being treated as one, as 14 charges were finalised against them.

Mr Pike-Wills, Mr Sansbury, Mr Khan and Mr Davey were originally arrested over an alleged violent home invasion in Gulfview Heights on January 30.

The court heard four men wielding hammers allegedly entered a home, with the owner shot through a door during the rampage. He has since recovered from his injury.

Mr Pike-Wills and Mr Sansbury were later arrested a second time over a “drive-by shooting” in Mead St, Birkenhead, about 8.15pm on January 29 – the day before the Gulfview Heights shooting.

Court documents released to The Advertiser allege the shootings were the escalation of a week of offending.

The documents allege that on January 25, Mr Manhire, Mr Wilson and Mr Sansbury broke into a Mitchell Park home and committed theft with a firearm.

On January 26, the documents say another home invasion occurred in Pooraka – allegedly committed by Mr Manhire, using a baseball bat.

A day later, on January 27, Mr Pike-Wills, Mr Manhire and Mr Sansbury allegedly used a machete during an assault in Gawler. The documents state the Birkenhead and Gulfview Heights shootings then occurred at which Ms Wanganeen was allegedly present.

Mr Paiva is facing firearms charges after allegedly supplying a weapon to Mr Pike-Wills in late January. All except Mr Paivaare charged with serious criminal trespass.

Mr Sansbury and Mr Pike-Wills are also facing charges of causing serious harm with intent and firearms charges.

Mr Manhire is charged with causing harm with intent, while Mr Wilson is charged with committing theft using force.

Mr Khan and Mr Davey are charged with causing serious harm with intent and dishonestly deal with property.

Ms Wanganeen is charged with dishonestly deal with property without consent.

All are yet to enter any pleas.

The court heard defence counsel for many of the defendants had received hundreds of pages of disclosure and alleged evidence and, therefore, needed time to prepare their case.

Mr Nitschke granted applications for more time, and adjourned the matter to a later date.

Each of the defendants – apart from Mr Wilson – were remanded in custody to face court again in August.
