A 36-year-old man has been charged with setting fire to his own caravan and ute in Royal Park on Monday evening.
Fire crews were called to the scene just after 6pm on Monday, where thick smoke could be seen billowing from the caravan park.
Witnesses said they saw the man standing back to watch his caravan and ute burn, leading police to believe the fire had been deliberately lit.
“I quickly pulled over and I said, have you called the fire brigade and he said no,” witness John Cooper told 7NEWS.
The caravan had been gifted to the man identified as Mr Singh by friend Glenn Gray, the manager of a food-processing business located on the site.
Mr Gray told 7NEWS he had allowed Mr Singh to live on the property for several years and store his belongings there.
CFS crews arrived on the scene, witnesses saying the flames could be seen as high as the building.
Police arrested the man at the scene and he was taken into police custody for questioning.
Mr Gray told 7NEWS he didn’t believe Mr Singh had deliberately set fire to his own caravan and “wasn’t capable of doing something like this”.
“Why would he do that,” the manager said.
“Nah - I don’t believe it.
“He’s a really nice bloke, if he sees people walking down the street who are down and out, he’ll give them 10 bucks or 20 bucks and say, here you go brother,”
“He said he come home from work, went to the door of the caravan and saw a spark from the corner of his eye and then, whoop.”
The man has been charged with two counts of arson and is set to face court.
