Nine in court over ‘very violent’ Leigh St, Adelaide, brawl

Police fear there could be retribution after they claim a CBD brawl erupted between groups with alleged bikie links, where glasses were thrown and men were hit over the head with boards.

Does alcohol make us violent?

Allegations of a wild CBD brawl between two groups have been aired to the court, as police fear there could be retribution.

Dean David Allsopp, Daniel Leigh Flynn, Jack David Innes, Danny Nedza, Emmett James O’Rielley, Nicholas James Rehmann, Riley Allan Saunders, Dylan James Squire and Jake Scott Thomas are all accused of the affray on Leigh St on July 23 at 1am.

A prosecutor told the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday they were opposed to the removal of the non-contact clause between the men, as well as allowing them back into the CBD.

The court heard two groups of men engaged in a “very violent” fight that allegedly occurred inside a nightclub where there were over 100 members of the public.

“There was a fight that started in there and that went out onto the road,” the prosecutor said.

“There are allegations that bollards were used, glasses were thrown and there was … some boards were used to hit over people’s heads.”

The prosecutor said they had concerns that if the men were allowed to meet up again in the CBD it would escalate or there would be retribution.

The court heard Mr Thomas was alleged to be a full member of the Gypsy Joker outlaw motorcycle gang, while some other defendants were associates or persons of interests.

The prosecutor said Mr Rehmann had alleged links to the Descendants motorcycle club.

“I’m not sure if that is behind why this started, I don’t know and I won’t speculate,” the prosecutor said.

“Members of the public have the right to come to the city and not be subjected to this type of behaviour.”

The men, aged between 24 and 34 and all from the northern suburbs, are charged with affray, while Mr O’Rielley is also charged with using or possessing a prohibited weapon.

Casey Isaacs, for Mr Squire, Mr Thomas, and Mr Saunders told the court his clients had been close friends since school and asked to remove the non-contact clause.

Andy Graham, for Mr Innes, asked for the same variation, saying his client was Mr Squire’s son’s godfather and was family friends with Mr Thomas.

Mr Rehmann, Mr Allsopp, Mr Flynn and Mr Nedza also applied to remove the non-contact clause between them.

Christina Chrisakas, for Mr Rehmann and Mr Allsopp, told the court her clients had a business together.

Magistrate Paul Foley removed the non-contact clause between the different groups and varied the CBD banning condition so all the men are not allowed to be in or around any licensed premise in the area.

The charges were adjourned until January.
