NCA bomber Domenic Perre has extensive history of refusing medical treatment and going on hunger strikes, court told

Hunger strikes and refusing to take his 15 medications each day – the NCA bomber is the one making his life in prison worse, a new report claims.

NCA bomber Domenic Perre takes 15 medications a day for a litany of health problems but has “an extensive history” of refusing treatment and staging “hunger strikes”, court documents reveal.

Perre has argued it would be harsh to jail him for life without parole given the heart attack he suffered after he was found guilty of both murder and attempted murder.

He has repeatedly asserted, in court, the Department for Correctional Services is incapable of managing his 14 health issues – including Covid-19 – for the remainder of his life.

In documents released to The Advertiser by the Supreme Court, however, the Department has refuted that assertion – saying the only barrier to Perre’s wellbeing is Perre himself.

“Perre has repeatedly been informed by medical staff … of the importance of following advice and treatment, and understands the risks, including death, if he does not comply,” it says.

“He has an extensive documented history of noncompliance with all medications, refusal of engagement with medical and nursing services, declining administrations of medications and blood glucose level (BGL) monitoring.

“Refusal of medications and hunger strikes will precipitate the need for hospitalisation (but) I am confident that a normal medication regime can be managed for Mr Perre while he is on remand or serving a custodial sentence.”

Perre, 65, was found guilty of murdering Detective Sergeant Geoffrey Bowen and attempting to murder lawyer Peter Wallis by sending a parcel bomb in 1994.

On Monday, the duo’s families denounced Perre as an evil wannabe gangster who is worthless as a human being, vowing to never forgive him for his cowardly and abhorrent crime.

During that hearing, prosecutors tendered a report from the Department regarding Perre’s health, which listed his ailments as:

CORONARY artery bypass on July 6, 2022.

ACUTE heart attack on June 23, 2022 – after which he declined further treatment.

CHRONIC pulmonary issues diagnosed in 2019.

AN inflammatory condition causing blood clots, treated by medication.

TYE 2 diabetes.

HIGH blood pressure.

STARVATION Ketosis “from hunger strikes”, with the “most recent” in May 2022 and November 2020.

HIGH cholesterol.

LEG and vein thrombi.

TWO haemorrhages and a bone fracture in 2013.

CHRONIC back pain.

RIGHT hip and shoulder arthritis.

ASTHMA and a Covid-19 infection.

ALLERGIES to several medications.

It also lists his treatment regime, involving 15 separate medications including twice-daily injections, vitamin treatments, eye drops and use of an asthma puffer.

The report notes prisoners have the right to refuse treatment, but says that “does not impact upon the care” provided by the Department.

“If he continues to decline, (staff) document this in the health record … Perre is competent to make those decisions,” it says.

Justice Kevin Nicholson will sentence Perre next month.
