NCA bombing guilty verdict: Sean Fewster's analysis

NCA bomber Domenic Perre has undergone heart surgery in the wake of his convictions for murder and attempted murder over the infamous 1994 explosion.

On Thursday, surgeons at the Royal Adelaide Hospital conducted a procedure to unblock one of Perre’s arterial valves.

Perre has been in the RAH since Thursday last week, having fainted in the cells of the Supreme Court after being found guilty of murder and attempted murder.

His state of health was an issue on several occasions during his 11-month trial, as was the lack of access both his family and counsel had to him in prison.

Before and while awaiting the end of his trial, Perre – who has been held in the Adelaide Remand Centre – has had several visits to the RAH after complaining of chest pains

On each occasion, he was examined by doctors and no further action was taken.

On Friday, Perre’s legal team declined to comment on their client’s present situation.

The Advertiser understands Perre had complained of chest pains before surgery and that high security around him has meant his family has seen him only once since the verdicts.

It is also understood he is expected to be transferred back to the Remand Centre sometime this weekend.

While Perre is set to face sentencing submissions in September, his health may alter that timeline – along with his legal team’s plans to appeal the verdicts.

Since last Thursday, interstate silks have been contacted and consulted over a potential challenge to the decision in both the Court of Appeal and High Court.

Perre trial goes on tour of CBD locations

Perre, 65, had been SA Police’s prime suspect since the bombing on March 1, 1994, and is already serving a seven-year prison term for drug offending.

At trial, prosecutors alleged – and the court accepted – Perre sent a parcel bomb to the NCA with the intention of killing detective Brevet Sergeant Geoffrey Bowen.

The bomb also severely injured lawyer Peter Wallis, who survived the incident but died from natural causes before last week’s verdict.

In his verdict, Justice Kevin Nicholson said the prosecution had proved, beyond reasonable doubt, Perre had the means, motive and opportunity to carry out the bombing.

He also dismissed assertions, by Perre’s legal team, that other people – including key prosecution witness Allan “Gadget” Chamberlain – could have sent the bomb.
