A woman has admitted causing the deaths of two brothers in a head on crash at Mount Jagged last year, a court has heard.
Michelle Kendy Bubner, 50, of Morphett Vale, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday where she pleaded guilty to two aggravated counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
Bubner was driving a white Ford utility that crashed head-on into a Toyota van, killing brothers Mojtaba and Jawad Mohammadi, aged 31 and 28 respectively, on Victor Harbor Road, near Mount Compass, about 4pm on Saturday, May 2, 2020.
Bubner’s lawyer told the court the matter had been called on early for his client to enter pleas.
The early guilty pleas mean Bubner is eligible for a discount of up to 25 per cent on any court-imposed penalty.
Chief Magistrates Judge Mary-Louise Hribal read the charge against Bubner, saying it was alleged she “drove a vehicle in a culpably negligent manner or recklessly or at speed or in a manner that was dangerous to any person”.
“It’s further alleged that the circumstances of aggravation are that at the time of the offence the vehicle was driven in contravention of sections 45A, 47, 47BA of the Road Traffic act,” she said.
Those sections refer to careless driving, and driving under the influence of a prescribed drug.
Police Commissioner Grant Stevens previously said the crash was a tragedy that had a “devastating impact” on the family of the two brothers.
At the time of the crash, police said Bubner had been trapped in her vehicle for more than an hour before she was freed from the wreckage and flown to Flinders Medical Centre for treatment.
During the brief hearing, Bubner was also placed on a simple $1000 bail agreement.
She used a walking stick to exit the court and did not comment to waiting media.
She will next appear in court in June.
