Two men who died in a head-on crash on Victor Harbor Rd were brothers, the Police Commissioner has announced.

The two men died at the scene after their white Toyota van and Ford utility collided on a gentle curve in the road about 5kms south of Mt Compass just after 4pm on Saturday.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the crash was yet another tragedy on our roads.

“This family has had a devastating impact with the loss of their sons,” he said.

“We are still investigating the collision. It is another tragedy only a week after another double fatality and this puts our road toll to 41 compared to the same time last year.

“Everyone knows that last year was a tragic year on our roads and unfortunately we are heading in the same direction at this point in time.”

Nurses on their way to work and fellow motorists rushed to the aid of the three people involved in the crash just after 4pm on Victor Harbor Rd in Mount Jagged.

The van was heading south to Victor Harbor while the ute was heading north.

The van’s driver, a 28-year-old man from Novar Gardens and his passenger, a 31-year-old man from Salisbury Downs, sadly died at the scene.

Their van was extensively damaged and came to rest on the dirt verge of the road.

The ute flipped and came to rest on its side in the middle of the road. Its driver, a 49-year-old woman from Hallett Cove, was trapped in her seat.

Paramedics and firefighters took an hour to free her from the wreckage and she was flown to Flinders Medical Centre for treatment. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Major crash investigators spent several hours combing the scene for information to explain what happened in the moments leading up to the crash.

Victor Harbor Rd was closed between Goolwa and Mosquito Hill roads for several hours while investigators examined the scene but it has since been reopened.

Police are asking witnesses to the crash and anyone who saw either vehicle before the crash, particularly the van – a white 2003 Toyota Townace.
