A man accused of crashing his car into a petrol pump before attempting to set a paper towel on fire and threatening to burn down a Marion service station has been refused bail after a Magistrate deemed him a danger to the community and a flight risk.
Counsel for Quinton Cabral, who appeared before the Christies Beach Magistrates’ Court via video link on Monday, sought an application for a bail inquiry report to be ordered.
She said Mr Cabral wished to apply for bail at the address where the mother of his child lived in South Australia although she had not been able to reach the contact for the address.
But the prosecution opposed counsel’s application.
She said Mr Cabral posed a flight risk if released on bail and had convictions in NSW.
Mr Cabral has lived in South Australia for more than three years and had no prior recorded offences within the state.
Mr Cabral allegedly crashed his silver Holden into a petrol pump of a Marion Rd OTR at around 2.30am on Monday morning, destroying the pump and “causing it to fall to the ground”, the court heard.
An OTR employee then saw the man walking around “holding a paper towel and trying to set it on fire”, the prosecutor said.
“The witness ran into the office and called the police and while on the phone he could hear the accused yelling words like “I will burn this place down” and “open the door”,” she said.
Mr Cabral then allegedly ran his body into the station door.
Prosecution said petrol was leaking from the pumps and if Mr Cabral had lit a fire, it could have caused significant damage or an explosion.
“The witness was concerned for his safety,” she said.
The 45-year-old man has been charged with acts to endanger life, arson, damage, speed dangerous and due care.
Magistrate Natalie Browne said would be refusing bail on Monday given the seriousness of Mr Cabral’s alleged offences and the “danger that he poses to the community”.
She agreed Mr Cabral was a flight risk and was additionally concerned about his mental health.
“I will certainly not release him today to be on the streets,” she said.
Mr Cabral was arrested on Oakleigh Rd near the service station.
His vehicle was impounded and he was also taken to hospital for a sample of his blood to be taken.
