An elderly man has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after he was struck by a train just north of Adelaide on Sunday.
Just before 9am, police and paramedics were called to the Ovingham Railway Station, after a man was struck by a passing train at the pedestrian crossing on Devonport Tce.
The 81-year-old, from Renown Park, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
A police spokesman said officers from the public safety transport branch were investigating, but there were limited witnesses.
“His wife was with him at the time, but she was a little further away,” he said.
“It happened at the pedestrian crossing, but we wouldn’t be speculating on the circumstances until the investigation takes place.”
It is the third serious crash involving a train in the past two months.
In May, a 62-year-old Pennington woman was killed when she was struck by a train at a crossing near the Alberton Railway Station.
Last month, a 64-year-old man was riding his bike when he crossed the tracks and was struck by the train on the Gawler line.
The cyclist was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he was in a serious condition and expected to undergo surgery.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
