A passenger has recalled hearing a thud before the train he was riding stopped in a tragic accident that cost the life of a woman crossing the tracks at Alberton.

Aiden McIlduff was on the back carriage when he heard the noise at the front of the train just before 12pm Tuesday.

“The brakes came on pretty quick and you sort of instantly wonder what’s going on,” he said.

“When I saw someone laying on the tracks and then all of a sudden there’s cops walking down the tracks.”

The Pennington woman, 62, was killed after being struck by the train at Alberton Train Station.

Dozens of emergency service vehicles rushed to the station, according to witness Theo Goldsworthy-Hess, 21.

He said he was on the train going to university when it stopped suddenly.

“Then I looked down and there was a person on the ground.”

“We were advised there’d been an incident and from where we were on the train you could see what was going on,” he said.

Around 25 passengers were made to wait on the train for up to an hour before they were allowed to disembark.

“We had to climb down from the train onto the tracks,” Mr McIlduff said.

“I was fine but it was a bit tricky for the elderly.”

Boom gates were down at Fussell Place crossing and trains were stopped in both directions until services resumed on Tuesday afternoon when the scene was deemed safe.

Replacement buses were organised for passengers while services were disrupted.

Witnesses were offered counselling after the incident.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
