A man has been arrested for allegedly setting fire to his own home in Adelaide’s south overnight.

Just before 4.30am on Sunday, police and fire crews were called to a home on Stella Court in Hackham West after reports of flames coming from the home.

As firefighters battled the blaze, nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution.

MFS crews extinguished the fire, but the home’s roof had caved in and surrounding houses had minor smoke damage.

Southern District CIB and Fire Cause Investigators attended the scene later on Sunday morning, before arresting the 52-year-old occupant of the home.

He has been charged with arson and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
