A motorcyclist has died in a horror multi-vehicle crash on the Eyre Highway on Friday afternoon.
Authorities understand a ute and a motorcycle collided at Corunna Station near the intersection of Iron Knob Rd around 2.30pm.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but the motorcyclist, a 66-year-old Barmera man, could not be saved.
The driver of the ute, a 31-year-old Ceduna man, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the Whyalla Hospital.
Major Crash investigators examined the scene, closing the Eyre Highway to all traffic with diversions in place via Iron Knob Rd and a mine site access road to Iron Knob. The highway has since reopened.
The man’s death is the 28th life lost on the state’s roads so far this year, and the 5th motorcycle fatality, after a 23 year old man died at Thebarton on Friday morning.
The road toll at the same time last year was 12.
It is also the second serious crash in the region this week, just a short distance from where 37-year-old Whyalla woman Kimberley Pursche and 35-year-old Whyalla Sturt man Travis Terry were killed.
Meanwhile, emergency services responded to a serious crash at Mawson Lakes.
It is believed three cars were involved in a rear-end collision at the intersection of Salisbury Highway and Elder Smith Rd around 8.30pm on Friday.
A 52 year old male driver of the rear vehicle was rushed to the Lyell McEwin Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver of the middle car, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The five occupants of the front car escaped injury.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, however initial inquiries indicate a medical episode may have contributed to the incident.
Traffic restrictions were implemented in the area but were lifted overnight.
