A young motorcycle rider has died after crashing into four stationary cars just outside the Adelaide CBD on Friday.
Emergency services rushed to Port Rd at Thebarton about 11.10am after reports of a crash at the James Congdon Drive intersection.
Witness Terri, who was stationary in one of the four cars involved in the incident, said she believed the motorbike rider clipped one car, lost control and then ricocheted off the other three – including hers – as it snaked down the road at high speed.
Terri, of Kings Park, who declined to give her surname, heard what she first thought was the bang of a car rear-ending hers.
“It wasn’t until I got out of my car that I saw the motorbike,” she said.
“He was swerving through the stationary cars. He must have been going fast.”
Terri said paramedics were quickly on scene and performed CPR on the rider.
“It didn’t look good, his face looked frozen,” she said.
Another witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said passers-by retrieved blankets and other items to shield the scene.
Debris was scattered across the road, with the black and blue motorcycle sitting on the median strip.
The rider was rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition. He died a short time later.
The drivers of the cars were not injured and were being breath-tested at the scene.
Three of the four cars left the scene around 1.40pm, allowing traffic to flow freely in a southerly direction on James Congdon Drive.
The fourth car was towed soon after.
Trams were briefly suspended and buses on multiple routes were detoured.
