Heavy smoke is blanketing Adelaide’s north as a large fire at a scrap metal facility burns.
Fire crews were alerted to the blaze at Wingfield about 1pm on Tuesday with reports about 40 vehicles were on fire in a scrap metal yard.
The SARS Metal Management property was seen with large flames coming from the yard.
At 2:30pm, an MFS truck was still dousing the flames with a water hose, while a crane appeared to be sifting through the rubble.
David Saunders, 58, of Wistowe, works behind the scrap yard and said there were no loud noises or bangs announcing the fire.
“We were working out the back and we saw the smoke and then quite a few sirens shortly afterwards,” he said.
“It was quite black smoke … We were just standing by and getting ready to evacuate if need be.”
Office manager Sharina Zimmermann, 38, said she saw the smoke billowing from more than 500m down Millers Rd at her worksite.
“I saw it through the window because our office faces toward South Terrace and the fire went quite high,” Ms Zimmermann said.
“I called triple-0 straight away and they said other people had already called them earlier.
“We heard popping sounds every so often which was probably the cars … but the smoke was quite thick and very, very black.”
An MFS spokesman said people should avoid driving in the area.
“Crews are currently on scene and have controlled the fire and will be continuing to work until it is fully extinguished,” she said.
“There is currently no threat to the community. If you’re in this area, be advised there is a large amount of smoke present and people should shut all doors and windows.”
At least five fire engines were at the scene and the smoke was completely extinguished by 3.15pm.
