A man who allegedly pulled his pregnant partner’s hair and jumped on the bonnet of a car she was driving said he was only trying to protect her and their unborn child.
Luke Ashleigh Cooper, 43, applied for bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, after he allegedly breached bail and was found in the company of his partner.
A police prosecutor told the court Cooper was a prescribed applicant, meaning special circumstances would need to be met for his release on bail.
The court heard Cooper was given a bail condition not to contact his partner after he allegedly assaulted her.
Cooper and his partner were then allegedly found together at a Hindley St hotel on July 24.
A police prosecutor told the court the initial charges stemmed from a relationship breakdown.
“At that time she was pregnant – they had been arguing,” the police prosecutor said.
“They’ve gotten into a vehicle, she’s wanted to leave – he’s grabbed at her shirt and pulled at her hair, pulling her back into the car.”
The court heard as the alleged victim went to drive off, Cooper jumped onto the bonnet.
“She drives off with him on the bonnet,” the police prosecutor said.
The court heard Cooper got off the bonnet as the alleged victim continued to drive and was later found by police and told them she had been assaulted by Cooper.
Cooper, of Adelaide, is charged with assault and breaching bail. He is yet to enter any pleas.
Peter Hill, for Cooper, said there were no allegations of violence in the breaches of bail and the initial charges would be contested.
“Mr Cooper explains to police that he did not pull the alleged victim by the hair but did pull her to stop her from jumping out of a moving vehicle which would have potentially killed her and potentially killed the unborn baby,” he said.
The court heard the alleged victim who was 20-weeks pregnant lost the child recently.
“She has sought comfort in the defendant – the father of the unborn child,” Mr Hill said.
Ms Sutcliffe granted Cooper bail.
The charges were adjourned until August.
