A drunk driver has pleaded guilty to causing a three-car crash that killed a female passenger north of the Adelaide Hills.
Lewis James Barton, 29, from Mount Pleasant, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday to answer the charge.
He pleaded guilty to aggravated causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of aggravated causing harm by dangerous driving.
About 6pm on October 17, Barton was driving a Nissan four-wheel-drive when he caused an alcohol-fuelled crash with a Holden SUV and a Holden ute on Eden Valley Road at Mount Pleasant.
The passenger of the SUV, a 59-year-old Angaston woman, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She died in hospital 10 days later.
The driver and passenger of the ute, a 72-year-old man and 58-year-old woman from Nuriootpa, were left with non-life threatening injuries.
It is alleged Barton ran from the vehicle before police arrived and was arrested a short time later in a nearby paddock.
He was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Barton is yet to plead to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing serious harm.
Defence counsel told the court they were negotiating with prosecution.
Barton will appear in court again next month.
