A grassfire that was burning out of control near Palmer in the state’s Murraylands, coming perilously close to homes, has been contained, the CFS say.
About 50 CFS firefighters, with the help of water bombers, worked on the fireground, supported by six aircraft, including firebombers and observational aircraft.
About 30 firefighters will remain on the scene, supported by aircraft, to continue putting out hot spots in inaccessible terrain, the CFS said in an update at noon.
The operations are also being supported by SA Police and SA Power Networks.
CFS warns the fire may be causing smoke in the area, and members of the community are urged to take care, particularly if driving.
Roads are currently open around the fire, however, this may change at short notice.
Just after 9am the CFS had warned people to get out: “Leave now. This grassfire may threaten your safety. Check that the path is clear and go to a safer place. Do not enter this area as conditions are dangerous,” the CFS issued at the time.
The CFS warns that emergency services may be working on and around roads in the area, and motorists should stay away.
People who need to travel on roads in the area should take care and drive to the local conditions.
