A mullet-sporting construction worker has faced court after police allege he was caught in a stolen ute with meth and prescription drugs.

Kym Christopher Nyenhuis, 34, faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with trafficking a controlled drug, breach of bail, possessing a prohibited weapon, driving and damaging a vehicle without consent and possessing prescribed equipment and prescription drugs.

Police alleged that on the morning of June 7 at 7.43am, police were called to check on a Holden ute where Nyenhuis was found sleeping in the driver seat at Jane St, Smithfield.

The police prosecutor told Magistrate Terence Forest that when officers checked on the vehicle’s identification number it was found to have been reported stolen.

The prosecutor alleged that a glass meth pipe was found in the centre console of the vehicle, leading them to call in further assistance to search the rest of the car.

“Police found two glass pipes, five sleeves of prescription medication, 10 suboxone films, five unknown tablets, two plastic bags containing 22 grams of methamphetamine, two bottles containing 45mls of butenadiol, two sets of scales and a number of plastic bags containing methylamphetamine,” the police prosecutor said.

Police found $840 dollars in cash and arrested Nyenhuis for breach of bail, charging him with drug and driving offences on top of two outstanding matters.

Nyenhuis’s lawyer told the court Nyenhuis’s prior charges dated back to 2019, when he had a serious drug addiction.

She told Magistrate Forrest that Nyenhuis had experienced a relapse on the date of the recent alleged offending due to a close friend committing suicide.

“He is working full time in construction and cares for one child of his own and one step child in a family home with his partner.”

She said Nyenhuis intends to contest the charges and there is no indication in the evidence regarding drug trafficking.

Magistrate Forrest released Nyenhuis on home detention bail at Reid, Gawler West.

He will reappear on September 1 at Elizabeth and at the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 15 December for his major indictable charges.
