A pregnant 19-year-old who allegedly bashed, stabbed and robbed an innocent tourist in the CBD earlier this year will stay behind bars as she awaits the outcome of a home detention report.

Jasmain Rose Phillips, from Campbelltown, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court via video link in front of Magistrate Brian Nitschke – charged with aggravated theft using force and aggravated dishonestly taking property.

The court heard she was out on bail at the time of the offending.

Magistrate Nitschke said the charges Ms Phillips was facing were “very serious”.

“At the moment she’s alleged to have used a knife to stab a stranger during the course of a robbery,” he said.

“There’s a very strong case against her.”

Just before 2am on Thursday, December 28, it’s alleged a 37-year-old man was retrieving a drone charger from his car on Franklin St when he was approached by a group of four people.

The victim, a tourist, said while he was in his car, three men and a woman allegedly demanded money from him, attacking him while he hid inside his vehicle.

He was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with non-serious injuries after sustaining two stab wounds and several cuts across his hands, arms and legs.

Ms Phillips, who faced court earlier this year alongside her co-accused’s Bradley Grogan, 25, and Nicholas Tsardanis, 18, previously applied for home detention bail so she could be “supported in the community for her pregnancy”.

On Wednesday, a court heard the prosecution was opposed to all forms of bail – submitting Ms Phillips had 25 breaches of bail marked without conviction and 17 breaches of bail marked with conviction.

“In my respectful submission, Your Honour could have no confidence that she would be able to comply with bail,” the prosecution said.

Ms Phillips’ defence counsel argued her time being remanded in an adult institution had resulted in a “significant decline in her mental health”.

“She’s had numerous admissions to hospital,” they said.

“The issue is not her mental health,” Mr Nitschke replied.

“The issue is the protection of the public from her.”

Mr Nitschke ordered both a home detention report and a separate report into her compliance with previous bail orders.

Ms Phillips will appear in court early next month.
