A teenager has admitted to viciously assaulting a man in a revenge attack before stealing his phone.

Isaiah Reece, 18, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday to assault causing harm and theft, after he bashed a man who provided an affidavit against him.

A prosecutor said the pleas were accepted in satisfaction to more serious charges, meaning the matter would be dealt with in the Magistrates jurisdiction instead of the District Court.

The court heard a warrant had been issued for Reece’s co-accused.

A prosecutor told the court last month it appeared Reece’s motivation for the attack was retribution as he was angry with the victim who had provided an affidavit against him in relation to another matter.

The victim was approached by Reece and two other males in June on Grenfell St, City Cross.

The court heard Reece and his co-accused then started assaulting the man.

“Hitting the complainant with a small hammer and a tyre lever, which ultimately caused swelling and bruising to the complainant’s eye,” the prosecutor said.

“As the complainant was able to run away, it is then that the accused stole his phone and keys.”

The prosecutor said there was CCTV footage of the attack.

Kassandra Girolamo, for Reece, previously asked the court to remove her client’s home detention bail conditions as he was finding it very restrictive and interfering with him finding employment and his path to rehabilitation.

“I assume being in jail might interfere with it,” Magistrate Brian Nitschke replied.

Ms Girolamo said Reece had engaged in drug counselling and was remorseful for the charges.

Mr Nitschke refused Reece’s application at the time, saying the victim needed to be protected.

Reece will face court in January for sentencing submissions.
