A teenager allegedly viciously assaulted a man in a revenge attack before stealing his phone, a court has heard.

Isaiah Reece, 18, failed in his bid to have more freedom after CCTV footage allegedly caught him bashing the man with weapons after he provided an affidavit against him.

A prosecutor told the Adelaide Magistrates Court they were opposed to removing Mr Reece’s home detention bail conditions, as it appeared his motivation for the alleged attack was retribution.

The prosecutor said Mr Reece was angry with the alleged victim as he had provided an affidavit against him in relation to another matter.

The alleged victim was approached by Mr Reece and two other males in June on Grenfell St, City Cross.

The court heard Mr Reece and his co-accused then allegedly started assaulting the man.

“Hitting the complainant with a small hammer and a tyre lever, which ultimately caused swelling and bruising to the complainant’s eye,” the prosecutor said.

“As the complainant was able to run away, it is then that the accused stole his phone and keys.”

The prosecutor said there was CCTV footage of the alleged attack.

Mr Reece, of South Brighton, is charged with causing harm with intent and theft.

The court heard there may be a resolution where Mr Reece pleads guilty to assault causing harm and theft, which would resolve in the Magistrates jurisdiction rather than the District Court.

Kassandra Girolamo, for Mr Reece, told the court her client had no prior adult offending and the alleged victim indicated to police he no longer wanted to proceed with the charges

“That’s a significant reason why the matters have been downgraded,” she said.

“So what?” magistrate Brian Nitschke replied.

“I’m told there is CCTV footage, otherwise he would be pleading guilty to nothing.

“Who cares whether the victim has decided he doesn’t want to proceed.”

Mr Nitschke asked if Mr Reece was just tired of being on home detention bail.

Ms Girolamo said Mr Reece was finding home detention bail very restrictive and interfering with him finding employment and his path to rehabilitation.

“I assume being in jail might interfere with it,” Mr Nitschke replied.

Ms Girolamo said Mr Reece had engaged in drug counselling and was remorseful for the charges.

Mr Nitschke refused the application, saying they were very serious allegations and the alleged victim’s protection was warranted.

Mr Reece will face court again next month, where he will be expected to enter pleas.
